To complement our recently opened permanent exhibition on Johnny Smythe, Eddy Smythe tells the amazing story of his father.
One of only 60 West Africans to serve in the RAF in WWII. Johnny flew several missions before being shot down, captured, and placed in a prisoner of war camp. He survived and went on to become Britain’s first black barrister, the Sierra Leone Attorney General and was also a pivotal figure in the Windrush generation.
On retirement he moved to Thame to be with his family and is buried in Thame Churchyard.
A truly incredible story and one not to be missed.
