The Naight Thame Mill
In 2023, Thame Museum received a donation of over 30 historical documents from 1660 onwards relating to Thame Mill and the adjoining meadow land historically known as “the Naight”.
The documents included 18 indentures, 2 abstract of titles, 3 wills, 2 insurance policies and various other items such as a lease and a mortgage.
The display tells the story of just one of these documents which is a final agreement dated 1774, recorded in the King’s Court at Westminster during the reign of King George III, concerning a legal transfer of property rights involving one-third part of four acres of meadow in Old Thame.
A dedicated team of Thame Museum volunteers read and transcribed each document and produced a summary of each one. They used painstaking human analysis and AI tools to find out more about the Naight as well as the Thame Water Corn Mill and Laundry.
The Naight is a four-acre area of meadowland “lying near” Thame’s Water Corn Mill and latterly operated as a laundry. Today, some parts of the Naight have been until recently covered by CPM Marketing and Travelodge UK HQ on Long Crendon Road, historically known as the Aylesbury Turnpike Road.
