Alfredo Campoli was born in Rome in 1906 and moved to England with his family when he was a child. He became famous worldwide as a violinist, known through his concerts, records and radio programmes.
He met Joy Burbridge, who was working as a secretary at the BBC and they married in 1942 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Thame, which was Joy’s home town. They retired to Thame in 1986, and lived at 39 North Street, where Alfredo is commemorated with a blue plaque.
