A commemorative album published to celebrate the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1937
With a set of Player’s Coronation series of cigarette cards.
Cigarette companies started issuing picture cards in packets of cigarettes at the turn of the 20th century. These were produced in sets with a theme, such as sports, films or national events, aimed to encourage customers to try and collect the set.
This set depicts the ceremonial dress of various people involved with the coronation, such as The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Dean of Westminster, a Royal Duke, the Earl Marshal of England, and Yeoman of the Guard.
King George VI ascended to the throne on the abdication of his brother King Edward VIII in December 1936. The Coronation took place at Westminster Abbey on 12th May 1937.
