8 May 1945 – V.E. Day (Victory in Europe Day)

To mark V.E. Day we have chosen this commemorative mug, which celebrated the 50th anniversary, 8th May 1995, showing Winston Churchill giving the
V for Victory sign against a map of Europe, 1945-1995.
On May 8, 1945, the end of nearly six years of war in Europe was celebrated by the Allied countries after Germany had surrendered the previous day. Prime Minister Winston Churchill announced the victory in an address to the nation while people throughout the UK celebrated in the streets.

You can see the mug together with other memorabilia in a small display in the museum library, marking the 80th Anniversary.
