Official Opening of the Johnny Smythe Exhibition

At a private launch reception on Friday 25th October, the exhibition was officially opened by Levi Roots, the Jamaican-British businessman and celebrity TV chef. David Dawson Deputy Mayor hosted the proceedings. Following Levi’s speech, Johnny’s son, Eddy gave a brief talk about his father followed by a short film of Johnny’s life.

Specially invited guests included those who had links with the Windrush, Sierra Leone and the RAF, plus family and friends.

In addition, a few pupils from Lord Williams’s School were invited, as they had taken part in a competition to be run annually on a piece of Art Work inspired by Johnny’s life.

This exhibition is a permanent installation located in a corner of the Main Gallery of the Museum. The displays and story boards are a fitting celebration of an exceptional man.
