The Story of Our Town

The Bayeaux Tapestry

A deeper dive

The Bayeaux Tapestry is much in the news for its temporary ‘return’ to England. Fresh from his latest visit to see it at the British Musuem, Charles will takes us into a more detailed review of the ‘real’ history behind the graphic images of the original. This will inlcude Harold’s visit to Normandy, the legitimacy of Duke William’s claim to the English throne, as well as what we know of the history of the tapestry itself – who created it – and why, and concluding with the question of why the English remained so attached to the story of England’s greatest defeat.

Join us for an intriguing journey back in history as we delve deeper into the Bayeaux Tapestry.

About the Speaker

Following a busy professional career as a lawyer, Charles’ “first retirement” comprised leading a new (non-legal) group taking The Thame Green Living Plan from blank slate concept through to detailed 50-page action plan. Once this was formally adopted by the town council,he found time to return to his ‘third career’ his love of history.

Charles has written two widely acclaimed books on the history of England: “Ice to Athelstan”, the Emergence of England, and ” Conquest to Charter”.

He is currently co-writing a short play based on ten scenes from Conquest to Charter, to be premiered at the Players’ Theatre next May.

An engaging account, written for a general readership, of how Britain was gradually repopulated over 10,000 years following the last Ice Age. The story is told in 12 concise chapters with maps and timelines, showing how Britain recovered from the ice, who settled – when, why and where, how hunter-gathering was overtaken by farming and the bronze age by the iron age.

This book, continues the story of England (and its neighbours) through Athelstan’s successors to the traumas of Aethelred (‘the Unready’) to the Danish and Norman Conquests.

Both books will be available to purchase on the night.
