The Story of our Museum
Thame Museum, housed in the former Magistrates Court House, built in 1861, was opened in 2007 and is located on Thame’s historic High Street, Oxfordshire, England.
Immerse yourself in the rich history of Thame, dating back over 6000 years. In Saxon times, Thame consisted of a settlement by ‘the dark flowing’ river from which the Town takes its name. Thame is referred to in the Domesday Book (1085-86) as belonging to the Bishop of Lincoln.
The Museum tells the ‘Story of Our Town’. Discover how people lived in Saxon and Roman times, in the time of John Hampden through the Civil Wars to the modern day.
It boasts a number of nationally important Tudor Wall Paintings, discovered in a Thame house owned by an Elizabethan merchant, and now housed in a specially re-imagined room, with touch screen display, to see and hear a piece of Thame Life from the 1590s.
The Community Room
The Community Room is used for pop-up exhibitions, showcasing a wide variety of topics from local & national history, art and photography, to famous people.
The Robin Gibb Gallery
Our Robin Gibb Gallery is a permanent exhibition commemorating the life of Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees who lived in Thame from 1985-2012 and is buried in Thame Churchyard.
